Zurainny Ismail July 15, 2012

The art of creating decorative designs from rolled, shaped and pasted paper is called quilling. This technique can sometimes prove very tricky to pick up. For this reason, it will be imperative that you learn a number of vital hints that will aid you comprehend the concept of this art at a deeper level. Adhering to the following craft ideas, you will not only be able to advance in the right direction but you will also utilize the quilling concepts with profound expertise and efficiency.

To ensure that you evade the problem of dissimilar sizes with similar measurement materials, it will be vital that you pick spirals with equal dimensions. Prior to gluing, you should ensure the coils are of the same size. You should also not forget to apply adhesive on afterwards.

As an advice to newbies in the quilling arena, they should consider picking standard arts magazine or check with reputable art shops for extra information. While in the process, you should not be confused with the dimension of the quilling paper. You should be careful to pick a standard dimension. For a spiral one, it should be 3mm (1/6) and for the fringed flowers, it should be 7mm or 10mm (3/8).

It is advisable that you evade the use of handmade or rice paper for quilling. This is because they are extremely thick and creating a spiral from them will be quite tough. Putting a light layer with an ideal varnish on the finished product will be very necessary. Sufficient gluing can also be good to have a strong grip over it.

For the fringed flowers, you should pick a 10mm wider paper and use a scissor to appropriately trim it on one part of the quilling. This facility is always available on the market, ready made.

Creating a 3-Dimensional design will need you to commence by making shapes and sticking them to one other on quilling mats (baking parchment and a cork mat covered up with polythene will be adequate). Carefully make a separation of the piece from the mat by use of a quilling needle. By now, it will be free-standing and gluing should make it firm. For further strengthening, you can consider using a craft varnish light coating.

To quill a basket that has beautiful flowers, you will have to make a figure and then paste the adhesive onto them together on a single mat. By using a quilling needle, separate it from the mat to make it free-standing.

Achieving equal tightness in every piece will necessitate having strong grasp over the paper strip. You should evade putting a lot of pressure, as it will result into extremely tight spirals. You should make efforts of holding stripped quill firmly. This should be done without stretching it a lot, as this will lead to very tight coils.

Affixing will definitely require the use of standard glue. The most preferred glue is normally the Craft PVA. Note that Sailor and Zig 2-way are normally specialist kinds of adhesive. They are always preferred by some quillers because they think they are thinner and also dry faster. However, no conclusion has been reached on which type works best, yet the most admired is PVA. This is owing to its availability at many craft stores all over the world. Note though, that you should always make use of glue sparingly.

It is not obligatory for you to buy costly fringed paper from stores. Whenever possible, using scissors to cut paper strips will be advisable.  However, I’ve heard that some crafters use paper cutter and paper shredder.

A resourceful use of scissors, tailor-made or fringed flower papers will be very necessary when making folded flowers. Quilling jewelry items like necklaces or earrings, using quilled objects such as animals, butterflies, and flowers and attaching them to pins will be very pretty. For those new in the quilling world, it will be recommended that you commence with easy techniques, such as flowers for gift tags.

In case you are using ultra-fine metal adhesive tips, soaking them in stronger nail polish remover will be the most idea way of cleaning them. This is because it is more effective in comparison to soapy water. Organic solvents are known to work at all times.

When pushing grape rolls out, pull it inward, as pushing it out will be harder. It is worthwhile noting that loose coils will be more uniform in their sizes with practice. You should make an effort of maintaining the tension. Note though, that not two coils will be accurately similar, just as it is with flower petals.

By using washers and cardboard, an individual would be able to make his own quilling board. You only need to get washers that are of the size of what you want, and then use glue to stick them to a cardboard piece.  FYI, a washer is a thin plate (typically disk-shaped) with a hole (typically in the middle) that is normally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a screw or nut.  However, quilling board can also be purchased online.

On the question of which type of paper is best for scrapbooks, regular weight or cardstock quilling paper will be the definite answer. Cardstock paper is good, but trying regular weight paper will be worthwhile, as it is so strong. A number of people use ‘pegs’ or ‘dots’ on pages to hold them up from the quilling.

Using an ultra fine adhesive applicator is the most ideal technique of applying glue. A little glass with wet sponge positioned in the bottom will make the bottle to flow freely, making the tip not to dry up. Put the bottle in an upside down position, with the tip in contact with the sponge.

By placing a light craft varnish layer onto the strip, you will easily manage putting it into the right frame. To create a 3D design, you should make a number of shapes and then fix them together with an adhesive. Remember to do this on an exceptional quilling mat. This will then be followed by separating the pieces with the mat by use of a quilling needle.

Placing a light varnish onto your finished product will strengthen it. You should remember to store your quill strips in a polythene bag.  Store your small strips and miscellaneous objects in a craft box. You can also consider knotting long strips loosely and storing them in polythene bags. Store short strips, odds and ends in craft boxes containing other compartments. These craft ideas will definitely help you create a great quill.

A resourceful use of scissors, tailor-made or fringed flower papers will be very necessary when making folded flowers.
