Reading is my no. 1 passion. I started reading quite late – Bahasa Malaysia books at 8 and English books at 9- but once I got it, I never stopped. I love storybooks, novels, magazines, etc. It’s the joy of discovering new worlds and new characters. But I don’t do speed reading. I love to savour the words. Sometimes, I even find it delightful to read out loud. I usually do that with my 4 year-old son.
Honestly, I am one of those who would rather spend my money on books than on clothes or jewellery. My home is filled with books. And so, unless I am very, very tired, I never sleep without going through at least a few pages of a book. Therefore, I’d rather have an actual book on my face when I fall asleep rather than an ebook reader (ouch!).
Since the library has relocated to Suria Kota Kinabalu, it has been more accessible to me, I have made quite a few trips to the library these past few months. The last book I read was ‘Lucifer Code’ by Charles Brokaw, and that was quite disappointing. It’s supposed to be a thriller-adventure-suspense book, but maybe I’ve read too many thriller-suspense stories that I’ve become immune to their charms. However, I am not giving up on the author yet, I’m hoping to read his ‘Atlantis Code’ first before I make the final judgment. ‘Atlantis Code’ has received nice reviews.
Before that, it was Olympos, by Dan Simmons. It’s the sequel to Illium, which I read a few years ago. Dan Simmons has written an amazing list of amazing books – horror, suspense and sci-fi, but all I’ve seen in the Suria library are his sci-fi books. But I don’t feel like reading his heavy ‘Hyperion’ yet. Maybe when I am older…?
Now, I am enjoying ‘Catching Fire’ by Suzanne Collins. It’s the sequel to ‘The Hunger Games’. I have not read ‘The Hunger Games’ but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie (starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth), so I want to know what happens next to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. I must say, the first few pages have had me hooked. That’s my day-time reading.
During the night, before I sleep, my book would be ‘Muhammad’ by Deepak Chopra. It gives a lighter point of view to the life of our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and half-way through, I think it’s a sweet potrayal of the Prophet’s life, through the imagined perspectives of the people close to him. Sure, it’s not the whole story, nor completely accurate, but it’s inspiring enough.
So when do I do my cross-stitching….? Some time in between everything else…
Sometimes, I wish I love clothes and make-up and all the other stuffs…. they are so pretty!
